Chamba is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the western Himalaya, maintaining its distinctive culture, temples, and artistic traditions for over a thousand years.
The finest group of ancient temples in Himachal Pradesh. Six shikhara-style temples in a walled courtyard from the 10th century. The bronzes of Vishnu and Shiva are exceptional early medieval metalwork. The adjacent State Museum holds exquisite miniature paintings.
The Chaugan is the wide central maidan, the civic heart of Chamba since the 10th century. In late July/August, it hosts the Minjar Fair — a week-long celebration of the maize crop with chariot processions. The bazaar nearby is famous for UNESCO-recognised Chamba rumal embroidery.
Chamba sits at the confluence of the Ravi and Sal rivers. The drive via Dalhousie passes through Khajjiar (24 km before Chamba), the 'Mini Switzerland of India'. The meadow is best viewed at dawn before the day-trippers arrive.
Bharmour (65 km away) is the ancient capital with 84 temples (Chaurasi). It's the gateway for the Manimahesh Yatra (Aug-Sept), a significant Himalayan pilgrimage to Manimahesh Lake (4,080m) below the sacred Kailash peak.
The most geographically varied drive in the foothills — from Punjab plains, up to Dalhousie ridge, across Khajjiar, and a long descent to the Ravi valley.
A 7-8 AM departure is ideal, arriving at Khajjiar by 9:30 AM before tourist buses fill the meadow, and reaching Chamba by 11:30 AM before the midday heat.
Banikhet (1,525m) is the last town with reliable ATMs. Carry sufficient cash for your Chamba stay (₹3,000-4,000 for 2 days), as Chamba ATMs can face shortages during peak seasons.
22 km past Banikhet on the Chamba road. Arrive before 10 AM while the meadow is quiet and the mist is lifting. Visit the 12th-century Khajji Nag temple on the lake shore.
The most dramatic section: a 24 km winding descent from 1,920m to 996m. The road is carved into the cliff face, with the Ravi river growing progressively closer and louder far below.
The road breaks out of the forest onto the wide town shelf. The driver parks near the Chaugan. The temples and bazaar are immediately accessible on foot.

During August-September, we arrange transport to Hadsar (trek starting point near Bharmour). Drivers know the timing windows to avoid severe Yatra traffic.
The 24 km descent from Khajjiar is narrow, cliff-carved, and prone to landslips in monsoon. Our drivers monitor HPPWD updates and use the alternative Tissa approach if the gorge road is affected by rain.
Our drivers know which temples are open at what hours, ensuring you don't arrive when the sanctums are closed. They can guide you to the State Museum (which is not on every tourist map).
During the Manimahesh Yatra, the road to Bharmour is extremely congested. Our drivers know the exact early morning departure windows to avoid being stuck behind pilgrim convoys.
Avoid cheap imitations. We know the location of the HPCA (Himachal Pradesh Craft Authority) shop and the names of the true artisans producing genuine double-sided UNESCO-recognized embroidery.
Chamba is genuinely remote and functional. The Iravati HPCA Guest House and Hotel Aroma Palace are the best options. Do not expect the variety or luxury of McLeod Ganj. Book in advance, especially during the Minjar Fair (July-August).
Oct-Nov: Finest season; post-monsoon clarity, fresh snow on Pir Panjal. Mar-May: Spring rhododendrons, pleasant 18-24°C. July-Aug: The Minjar Fair brings energy and colour, but monsoon can affect the gorge road.
Laxmi Narayan temple complex (examine the 10th-century bronzes). The Chamba State Museum for miniature paintings. An evening at the Chaugan when the town gathers and the Pir Panjal turns pink at dusk.
ATMs: Carry cash from Banikhet; Chamba ATMs have shortages during Yatra season. Mobile: Jio/Airtel work in town but drop toward Bharmour. Walking: The old town and temples are entirely walkable from the Chaugan.
