Khajjiar is one of the most immediately arresting natural sites in the western Himalaya. Formally declared the "Mini Switzerland of India" in 1992, the comparison genuinely earns its keep.
A 1.5 km circular meadow ringed by a dense wall of silver fir and deodar, creating a unique natural amphitheatre. The small lake sits at its lowest point. Best experienced in the early morning mist before day-trip coaches arrive.
Activity: The 4-5 km perimeter walk through the forest edge is highly rewarding.
A 12th-century shikhara-style temple on the lake bank, dedicated to the serpent deity Khajji Nag. Features excellent Himachali woodcraft and carved stone panels. The morning puja (6-8 AM) is deeply atmospheric.
The 24 km road from Dalhousie to Khajjiar through the Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary is almost entirely intact deodar forest. Barking deer and diverse birdlife (Himalayan barbet) are common sights.
Dalhousie (24 km) is the colonial hill station base. Chamba (56 km down the Ravi gorge) is the ancient capital with medieval temples. Both combine perfectly with Khajjiar for a 2-3 day itinerary.
Moving through three distinct landscapes: the flat Ravi river corridor, the steep Dalhousie ridge ascent, and the final Kalatope forest road to the plateau meadow.
A 7-8 AM departure is highly recommended to reach Khajjiar before 11 AM, beating the day-trip coaches from Dalhousie while the morning mist is still on the lake.
The road follows the Ravi river into increasingly forested country. The transition from Punjab flatland to mountain terrain is gradual, narrowing as the hills close in.
Dalhousie sits at 2,036m and is the natural pause point. It has the last reliable ATMs and pharmacies before Khajjiar. The town offers views west toward the Punjab plains.
One of the finest short mountain drives in Himachal. 24 km of old-growth deodar and silver fir forest with minimal traffic. The tree canopy closes almost completely overhead.
The forest opens suddenly to reveal the circular meadow and lake. The driver drops you at the meadow parking area or your hotel entrance if staying overnight.

Dalhousie is the natural overnight base for Khajjiar trips. It offers more accommodation options and colonial charm (Subhash Baoli, Panchpula). The 45-minute drive to Khajjiar is easily done as a day trip.
56 km from Khajjiar down the Ravi gorge. Features the ancient Lakshmi Narayan temple complex and the Bhuri Singh Museum. The descent road is dramatic. Best added as an afternoon trip from Khajjiar.

If extending to Chamba (56 km from Khajjiar), our drivers navigate the narrow, cliff-carved Ravi gorge descent safely. They also know parking spots near the Lakshmi Narayan complex which are easy to miss.
May–June: Peak season; full grass, blooming rhododendrons. Oct–Nov: Most atmospheric; clear skies, morning mist. Dec–Feb: Direct snowfall on the meadow creates a true 'Swiss' look. July–Sept: Lush green monsoon, but cloudy peaks and muddy turf.
Khajjiar has a few good options like the HPTDC Hotel Deodar. Staying overnight allows you to experience the meadow before 8 AM and after 5 PM in complete peace. Alternatively, stay in Dalhousie (24 km away) and visit as a day trip.
No ATMs in Khajjiar. Carry ₹500–1,000 from Pathankot/Dalhousie for horse rides and dhabas (UPI is unreliable here). Jio works well on the meadow; BSNL is good overall. Signal drops entirely inside the Kalatope forest road.
Do the 4-5 km meadow perimeter walk in the early morning (7-9 AM). Attend the morning puja (6-8 AM) at the 12th-century Khajji Nag temple. Enjoy the Kalatope forest drive in the afternoon light.
